Red by HBO

The Scythian Lamb (Japan)

25 January, 10,00PM

Ready for a wacky, whimsical movie? You might just love Yoshida Daihachi’s genre-bending movie, The Scythian Lamb. Through an interesting mix of dark humor, romance, and drama, sprinkled with a healthy dose of thrill, the film introduces six different characters – all murder convicts – relocated toa coastal town for “re-socialization”.

While the pacing of the story may lull you into a sense of security, it’s important to remember the inevitable, inescapable Murphy’s Law – where things can go wrong, they will.

Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster

29 January, 6:00PM

The sequel to the international 2008 hit comes with more humor and fighting spirit, despite lowered stakes in Ip Man 2. Set a decade after the Pacific War, the Wing Chun martial arts master has moved his family to Hong Kong, struggling to establish his own school while fighting corruption.

Fans of classic martial-arts film, where skilled athletes performed their own stunts, will love this action packed sequel.

Policeman and Me

31 January, 10:00PM

With a singular focus on the development of romance, nearly any couple can work, especially if you’re only in it for the feel good scenes. Such is the philosophy of many Japanese shoujomangas, and in effect, also of these romance stories’ movie adaptations.

Policeman and Me is one of them, featuring the unlikely romance between a high school student and a young policeman. While that pairing alone seems weird enough, they also get married, but the most intimacy they display is a single, chaste kiss.

Pulp Fiction

23 January, 10:00PM

Yes, this film is over 20 years old. Yes, it is still worth the re-watch, even in 2019.

In a film about two hitmen, a mob boss’ wife, an old boxer, and two small-time thieves, you can be sure things can get pretty crazy. Two decades since its debut, and still nobody seems to be able to pin down exactly what the movie means – not even the best film critics, nor the well-seasoned movie buffs – other than its crazy brilliance.

Filled with equal parts thrill and dark humor, Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction will leave you breathless and lost in all the best ways – definitely a timeless cinematic masterpiece.

Black Hawk Down

28 January, 10:00PM

Nothing says American action like a good ol’ blood and dirt, and the US military on a risky rescue operation. Rooted in a very true-to-life incident that happened in 1993,Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Downis riddledwith frequent and very brutal depictions of violence. Yet, these only put the acts of heroism and selflessness the soldiers displayed, on an even higher pedestal, without trivializing the horrors of the firefight.

Definitely a blockbuster worth re-watching this 2019.

John Wick: Chapter 2

31 January, 11:00PM

In this bigger, well-executed sequel, the retired super-assassin's plans to resume a quiet civilian life are cut short when Italian gangster Santino D'Antonio shows up on his doorstep, compelling him to repay past favours. John Wick: Chapter 2comes as a great build up to the first one, filed with tons of action and surprising twists, while curbing the brutality with sly humor just before they become too much.

If you’re craving for a good action flick to get you ramped up for the rest of 2019, then these flicks will more than do the trick.
