The hottest grand slam tournament on and offthe court ignites a new year, off the back of Roger Federer winning his 20th major title and Caroline Wozniacki her 1st in 2018. Officially starting on January 14, Monday, the 2019 Australian Open will continue for a fortnight, with the women’s singles final on January 26, and the men’s singles final on January 27.
Gunning for his 7th title in Melbourne and 21st Grand Slam title, Roger Federer faces strong contenders among the men’s draws, including top seed Novak Djokovic, Marin Cilic and John Isner. Rafa Nadal also returns to the courts for this Grand Slam, for possibly the last time, with the 17-time Grand Slam champion planning for retirement.
Over at the women’s side of the court, Serena Williams returns after claiming the Grand Slam title in 2017, and sitting out last year’s Australian Open. She’s one win Grand Slam win away from the record set by Margaret Court at 24, and she’s determined to break it. But she’ll be facing tough opponents in defending champion Wozniacki, as well as top seed and 2018 French Open champ Simona Halep, and 2018 US Open champ Naomi Osaka.
