12 Strong

Surprisingly underrated, Nicolai Fugslig’s war story, 12 Strong, is one for the books. The film is based on a true story – that of the first US troops to set foot on Afghanistan after the 9/11 – and takes on a gritty, realistic depiction of war time. Chris Hemsworth – more known as Thor these days – stars as the underestimated team captain of the troop.

One of the weirdest sights in this movie may just be the sight of these military men, armed with machine guns and ammo atop galloping horses, like misplaced medieval knights. Although it makes sense once you watch it, there’s no denying how bizarre it looks out of context.

The Shape of Water

At first glance, it seems impossible to buy into a romance between a mute cleaning lady and a humanoid sea creature, but that’s exactly what Guillermo del Toro does (and successfully, too) in his Academy Award winning film, The Shape of Water. A perfect blend of horror, fantasy and romance, del Toro takes you back to the 1960s, in a riveting story where love fights for freedom.

If the synopsis still makes you hesitate, perhaps you can take assurance from the movie critics at Hollywood – there’s a reason The Shape of Water broke the record for most Oscar nominations at last year’s Academy Awards.

Braven

Months before he was a buff and heroic fish man in Aquaman, Jason Momoa first served justice as a family man in Braven. In this revenge movie directed by stunt coordinator-turned-director Lin Oeding, Jason Momoa is Joe Braven - a lumberjack, father, and business owner, fully committed to his wife, daughter, and father.

In classic revenge-plot fashion, a bad man comes in one night and destroys Joe Braven cares for, setting off the epic fight scenes.Oeding proves his skill as these fights turn out realistically gritty, and surprisingly refreshing.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

When a drama film takes on the themes of vengeance, violence, and death – particularly the acceptance of – there is a tendency that some do it overdramatically, or not enough at all. But Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri spins such a story, weaving together the best and worst of human nature for a perfect tragicomedy.

The film hits – sucker punches, more like – where it hurts, exposing pain points of an entire town, that arguably reflects today’s society. It’s no wonder that Three Billboards won Golden Globes Best Motion Picture for Drama, and Frances McDormand’s outstanding performance, truly deserving of Best Actress.

Inconceivable

Oscar winners Nicolas Cage and Gina Gershon star as a doctor couple in Jonathan Baker’s thriller,Inconceivable. Highly reminiscent of a Lifetime movie, the story is about the affluent couple Brian (Cage) and Angela (Gershon), who lovingly care for their young daughter – one they had after miscarriages, and a successful in vitro fertilization.

All is well and good, until a veritable nanny from hell enters their lives in the guise of a deceptively helpful and beautiful woman.

Death Wish

Jan 26, 9:00PM

A remake of the 1974 titular movie, Eli Roth’s Death Wish stars Bruce Willis as a surgeon-turned-vigilante. Armed with scalpels by the day, Bruce Willis’ character, Paul Kersey, moonlights as a gunman on the hunt for those who killed his wife, and sent his daughter in a coma.

With how exaggerated and downright disturbing the ease Paul Kersey flips up his hoodie – and switch off his morals, it appears – to gun down dozens of corpses with heroic pride, Death Wish exemplifies everything concerning about gun laws (or the lack thereof) in the US.
