BOXES isthe directorial debut of popular English actress Jane Birkin who inspired the iconic Birkin bag by Hermes. This movie is based on Birkin's own family life, chronicling three marriages and the three children she bore from these marriages. CHILDREN OF SARAJEVO

CHILDREN OF SARAJEVO is a drama which lets you wander into a transitional society that has lost its moral compass, including the way it treats children of the people who were killed fighting for the freedom of their city. Follow the lives of two Bosnian war orphans as they try to find hope and comfort even as their life of bare survival becomes even more difficult when the brother gets into a fistfight at school. The incident triggers a chain of events leading the sister to discover that her young brother is actually leading a double life. Having bagged a Special Distinction of The Jury, Un Certain Regard Award, Cannes Film Festival 2012 and with The Hollywood Reporter defining it as “..a drama of some power…”.

Next is a heart-warming Palme d’Or nominee and winner for Best Film, Golden Globes, Italy – ONCE YOU’RE BORN. A rich 12-year old boy was lost at sea while on a yacht cruise with his parents. He is spotted and saved by a boatload of illegal immigrants, and so begins his arduous journey back home which will forever change him.

SHARA, directed by the prolific and 4-time Palme d’Or-nominated Japanese film maker Naomi Kawase, is a movie which accurately captures the unique directorial style that Kawase is known for – long takes that reveal each scene in one continuous shot. An immersive experience that should not be missed.

The cast, most of whom had never seen a movie before, lived as a "family" on the same remote farm of Minas Gerais province for a few months before filming began, and grew so comfortable as their characters that they improvised their own dialogue.

APACHES

APACHES is a film inspired by a real and senseless murder of a local teen by a group of his friends, which exposes the hidden power structures of race, class and wealth that underpin Corsica’s outwardly sunny tourist-isle image. Nominated for Cannes Director’s Fortnight & Golden Camera, this is a moving piece which deserves attention.

A SCREAMING MAN

We end off “Route to Cannes” with a Cannes Jury Prize winner and a Palme d’Or nominee – A SCREAMING MAN. A former swimming champion turned pool attendant who is now burdened with resentment, humiliation and poverty, must decide if he should give up his only treasure knowing he may never get it back – his son. The Guardian calls the acting “..a performance of immense dignity…sublime quality..”
