5 Football Clubs Starting the 2018-19 Season this Month

With 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League out of the way, Europe’s top football clubs turn their focus to the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Check out all the leagues kicking off this month, and where to catch them live:


1. Premier League

The top English professional football club league returns for its 27th season, since its establishment in 1992.

Will Manchester City be able to defend their crown? Or will they fall the way of Leicester, Manchester and Chelsea? Meanwhile, newcomer Wolverhampton Wanderers join the Premier League along with Cardiff City and Fulham, as the promoted clubs from the 2017–18 EFL Championship, replacing West Bromwich Albion, Swansea, and Stoke.

2. Ligue 1

Just coming off the high of their 2018 FIFA World Cup victory, the French league begins the 81st season of the Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain remain the team to beat this season, having topped the last season with five games to spare. Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon joins PSG’s formidable roster who already includes Brazil’s Neymar, top scorer Edinson Cavani, and young Kylian Mbappe.

3. La Liga

La Liga Santander kicks off on August 18, marking the 88th season since its establishment. This new season, video assistant referees will be used for the first time in Spanish football history.

Real Madrid enters with new management under Julen Lopetegui, looking to dethrone defending champion Barcelona. With star forward Cristiano Ronaldo out of the picture will Lionel Messi finally take home the Pichichi Trophy?

4. Serie A

Italy’s top-tier club football opens their 118th season of Serie A, with Juventus reigning at the top of the league. With the addition of Real Madrid’s football megastar Cristiano Ronaldo, the ultimate question on everyone’s minds is whether anyone can knock off the formidable team from their throne.

5. Bundesliga

Germany’s premier football competition returns with the 2018/19 season kicking off on August 24. With 28-time, Bayern, having won the last 6 seasons, it remains to be seen if the other 17 other clubs can mount a challenge. This will also be the first season since the end of World War 1 that Hamburger SV will not be playing in the top flight, but fans will no doubt welcome the return of FC Nürnberg and Fortuna Dusseldorf, after both clubs were promoted.
